CJ Sez: Sorry about the premature release >_>;; I was a bit overzealous with my torrent finger.
we decided to not using honorifics for this show. fnord said it kills the mood of the anime with this kind of theme or some sort
Wow, the very first question.
I suggested not using honorifics because:
- You can hear them
- If you can’t hear them, you probably wouldn’t really understand their meaning if they went into the subs anyway
- Therefore, for me, using honorifics is not so much about translation as it is about style – how Japanese do we want everything to look? Not in terms of liberal or literal translation, but in simple terms of look? Do we translate organization names if they have Japanese titles? The win or loss of doing either is minimal, but it impacts what things appear to be. In my opinion, honorifics go into the subs when the story is set in Japan or something very closely modelled after present, past or future-day Japan, and they go out when it’s set somewhere else.
I’m only QC on Sora Woto, so if you make a valid point in favor of honorifics, perhaps the others will reconsider.
yup I have (besides fact that I just can’t stand hearing honorifics and didn’t seeing them) it’s just plain weird saying it doesn’t fit style or whatever…….if u look at it, native english speakers should stop using name of days cuz they have they origns in norse language (or smth like that) BUT english ppl “inherit” them as their own (put here milion of other examples) so why…….oh well I don’t think there is point arguing so do whatever u please….yes u can flame me to ur heart content :D
I don’t really understand how that’s comparable, to be honest. Let’s take an example from this ep: Her name is Rio, not Rio-senpai. A honorific is not part of the name per se, it’s a grammatical construct for reflecting social relations. I completely understand that honorifics can’t be fully expressed in an English translation, but from that point my above logic still seems sound to me.
yeah but most ppl understand what it means so I don’t see problem with leaving it in tl….
The same goes for hearing it, though.
Imo choosing whether to include honorifics is more of a style decision than a translation or editing decision.
Yeah, I think including honorifics is indeed more of a style decision – based on the anime in question. And if it is indeed the reason for excluding honorifics, even though I prefer them left in (I like to read what I’m hearing when it comes to names) its perfectly fine to have them left out.
Thanks for subbing this by the way, I’ll be watching your subs :D
Awesome release!!! Thanks^^ Plus, Honorifics don’t really matter to me.
they only matter to weeaboos
Well I personally like to have honorifics in the translation, but I totally understand the reason behind leaving it out for this show.
Sora no woto; Sounds of the skies, somehow it haves a good ring to it doesnt it? i mean the translation of the name..
Only a flew minutes watching and already loving this one.
thanks for the release guys
Are your subs for this show original or based on Crunchyroll’s subs? I ask because I heard Crunchyroll is going to stream this show very soon.
I like this show…. it seems nice.
@Harima: How would we copy CR subs if they haven’t even made theirs yet? As for future episodes, it depends on a few different factors, so I won’t promise anything.
Will you guys still sub this now that CR licensed it?
@koro: Just like kanata always says:
“forward, march!”
I hope that answers your question.
^nice hahahah
I’m glad to hear you guys are still doing it (then again, I would’ve expected that since you were doing 11eyes and Sora no Otoshimono as well)
But regardless, a confirmation is nice =)
- We will continue it.
- Whether we use our own translation or edit/tlc CR’s will be subject to debate and decision, perhaps even on an ep-by-ep basis.
- The first ep is obviously our own work entirely since CR hasn’t even cast it yet.
Thanks for subbing. :)
Thank you very much for this release!
I’ve been waiting for this for month’s now. :)
Well, I do want the honorifics, you know… It just feels more right…
But great subs, anyway! ;)
l stil lbelive Honorifics should be used. it’s more apropriate, and it feels better with them.
